a staggering number here. more than 130 people are now confirmed dead across six states. new images tonight of the destruction, the moment a bridge is destroyed by a raging river. these images from eastern tennessee, the bridge completely washed away. in boone, north carolina, heavy rain triggering a mudslide careening down a hill. just extraordinary, destroying that property below. north carolina's lake lure filled with wood and debris. much of the city of asheville, north carolina, tonight left in ruins. stunned neighborhoods walking through muddy streets, surveying what's left there. many roads impassable, covered in debris. part of interstate 40 here through north carolina washed away. and the images tonight, the lines. at least a mile long, just waiting for gas there. tonight, with so many in need, the efforts to get help to them, with so many roads impassable. abc's faith abubey leads us off in asheville, north carolina, tonight. >> reporter: tonight, an urgent search for the missing, after

apocalyptic rain from remnants of hurricane helene turned hillsides to rivers of mud and tore bridges to pieces. >> there are 92 rescue teams out working, doing search and rescue right now. we're dealing with a situation that is unlike anybody's ever seen in western north carolina. >> reporter: floodwaters cutting off entire communities. more than 130 people dead across six states, and hundreds more still unaccounted for. parts of asheville, north carolina, now unrecognizable. and along this road, household items and tractor trailers piled up high. this one up in the trees, wrapped in down power lines. and the force of the flood waters so strong that it pushed what appears to be a cow or a horse underneath that one. >> this is what a flood will do. >> reporter: mark goldthwait's iconic music venue, the asheville guitar bar, is caked in mud. >> the water level was up to the main beam there. >> reporter: he is tired and frustrated.

>> past few days have been a nightmare. a lot of looting. we've lost everything, and people are coming in to take even more from us. >> reporter: lines for fuel more than a mile long. the need for the basics to live, water and food, growing more desperate by the minute. but so many roads remain impassable. images from the north carolina department of transportation showing massive chunks missing from crucial interstate 40. a massive effort now underway to get relief into the area. the national guard mobilizing troops and flying in heavy equipment from states as far away as new york and connecticut. civilian pilots in hickory, north carolina, using their own helicopters to fly in supplies. >> think hurricane katrina, except in the mountains and with helicopters, not boats. >> keep 'em coming, guys. >> reporter: our morgan norwood in winston-salem with local realtors turned volunteers. allison and callie filling trucks with water, paper towels, and diapers. >> we went from feeling helpless

for our neighbors to feeling like we could actually make a difference. >> reporter: hurricane helene made landfall hundreds of miles from here in florida's big bend four days ago. today, officials in florida announced that all state roads are cleared. and while they are dealing with devastation of their own, they're also sending teams to help their hard-hit neighbors to the north. and david, here in asheville, while authorities search for victims and bring in much-needed food and water, you can see it's been raining. they're still dealing with remnants of helene. there's also a massive cleanup effort still ahead. david? >> david: the damage has been extraordinary. faith abubey, thank you for your reporting for many days now. faith, thank you. let's get to ginger zee. you warned of the potential dangers of this storm. but to see it, it is just devastating for so many people. and you said earlier, parts of the remnants of this still churning and actually effecting some of the people hit by the storm already. >> reporter: that's right, david. where you saw rain around faith, believe it or not, four days

later, that is still remnants, and tropical moisture, from helene. this cutoff low has been spinning this around the mid south, and now the mid-atlantic, again all day today. the flood watches right through central virginia. the flash flood warning, the dark red boxes, greensboro, north carolina, you've got richmond, virginia, in one right now. that means flash flood warnings, don't get in the car, don't drive. obviously, we're going to still have a couple of these that could produce 1 to 3 inches very quickly. the lingering rain showers, we will finally push this out by tomorrow night. that's with a cold front. but then, just in time for us to look at the atlantic, very busy. joyce, ice act, kirk, not going to impact land, but you see that 40% chance of development, that's an area of thunderstorms we'll be watching to potentially include the gulf by this weekend. it's looking less knee fair use than helene. >> david: ginger, thank you. the storm aticketing the race for the white house tonight. vice president harris flying

air force two after speaking with the head of fema. she has also spoken with the governors of battered georgia and north carolina. north carolina officials asking harris and president biden not to visit just yet. the security challenge would be too great for the struggling state. earlier today, former president donald trump traveling to georgia, meeting with local officials in devastated valdosta. >> throughout the region, our hearts are with you. >> reporter: in georgia, a crucial battleground, trump repeatedly falsely stating that the state's republican governor brian kemp has not been able to reach president biden. >> the governor is doing a very good job, he's having a hard time getting the president on the phone, i guess they're not being responsive. the federal government is not being responsive. >> reporter: but earlier this morning, the republican governor said biden actually did call him over the weekend and offered his full support. >> i just spoke -- the president just called me yesterday afternoon. i missed him and called him right back, and he just said, "hey, what do you need?" and i told him, you know, we got what we need. we'll work through the federal process.

>> reporter: hundreds of people have died in lebanon, not just fighters, but civilians, too. this is the only main burns unit in lebanon and it gets almost no funding. but for 15-year-old hussein, it has saved his life. he was badly burned in an israeli strike on his house in southern lebanon. he says hezbollah had launched an attack from nearby. degrees warmer in the city, 20 in oakland. you will notice it's up 16 in san jose, 14 in santa rosa. looking at those temperatures right now, 80s and 90s for a good chunk of the bay area. a couple of 100 showing up to our north. the heat advisory that was in effect for today. parts of the bay area got upgraded to an excessive heat warning. it's the inland valleys, hills and the san francisco bay shoreline. the rest of the area shaded in orange is a heat advisory. all of this going until wednesday night at 11 p.m. the risk of heat related illnesses is moderate to major. for today, i would take it easy out there and definitely stay hydrated because you can see where the highest risk will be. these spare the air alert was also extended. it's not just for today, it is now in effect through tomorrow as we are expecting moderate to poor air quality. we are just getting started with this heat. it is going to intensify. i'll
